Riviera Maya, Q.R. — More than 3,000 taxis in New York and Chicago have become moving billboards for Mexico’s Caribbean. Boasting photos of blue water and sand beaches, the adverting is part of the state’s ongoing U.S. tourist promotion.
On Thursday, the CPTQ (Consejo de Promoción Turística del estado de Quintana Roo) announced the newly installed signs on American taxis in the two large U.S. cities.
“The circulation of these taxis in Manhattan and in the urban area of Chicago will allow the tourist destinations of the Mexican Caribbean to maintain a presence in the following days,” said the general director of the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council, Darío Flota Ocampo.
Flota said that the campaign began on May 10 and will run for 10 days in both cities. The advertising includes both still ads and videos that are broadcast on a screen inside the taxis as well as moving ads on the top of some of the units.
The moving ads on top of the taxis, which continually loop-play every minute, allows them to be seen by other cars and city pedestrians. Videos installed on screens inside the taxis play once every 10 minutes. Flota did not mention the cost of the ad campaign.
