The Ichkabal Archaeological Zone in Bacalar is an exciting new destination for history and culture enthusiasts.
Opening Date and Location
The Ichkabal Archaeological Zone, located 40 kilometers west of Bacalar Lagoon, will open to the public on January 3, 2025. This marks the first time since its discovery in 2009 that visitors can explore the site.
A Historic Discovery Restored
Ichkabal, a site with over 2,400 years of history, remained hidden until the late 20th century. The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) began research there in 2009. Through the Program for the Improvement of Archaeological Zones (Promeza), tied to the Maya Train project, the site underwent extensive restoration.
A Cultural and Political Center
Ichkabal was a major Mayan political hub, likely housing populations from the Mirador Basin after its decline. It also served as the seat of the Kaan’ul dynasty, or Serpent Dynasty, which extended its influence to northern Guatemala, rivaling Tikal. The site thrived between 200 and 600 AD and remained significant until the 16th century.
Engineering Marvels and Connections
The ancient city showcases remarkable hydraulic engineering. It features a rectangular reservoir, Aguada de los Cocodrilos, measuring 80 by 60 meters, designed to provide water year-round. LiDAR technology has revealed the settlement spans more than 60 square kilometers. A network of roads, or sacbe’ob, connects Ichkabal to Dzibanché, 40 kilometers away.
Newly Revealed Structures
The Promeza project uncovered and restored numerous structures of varying heights and volumes. Researchers found evidence suggesting residents dismantled facades during the city’s decline. Archaeologists Luz Evelia Campaña and Javier López Camacho led the team that preserved these features.
A Gateway to History
Ichkabal’s opening provides a glimpse into the grandeur of Mayan civilization. Visitors will marvel at its impressive structures, innovative engineering, and cultural significance, making it a must-visit destination.
