Mahahual, Q.R. — The southern part of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, known as Costa Maya, could be on its way to taking off for tourism. The Mexican Caribbean is internationally associated with Cancun, which was the second most visited city in the world during 2021.
However, most tourists who visit the state stay in the northern region where well-known enclaves such as Cancun, Puerto Morelos, Riviera Maya (Playa del Carmen) or Tulum are found.
The southern part of Quintana Roo, however, could register new figures in the arrival of visitors with the first direct flight between the United States, specifically from Miami, to Chetumal, the state’s capital city.
In December, American Airlines launched the first-ever direct U.S. to Chetumal flight. Travelers to Chetumal will save about four hours of travel time with the new direct flight since they no longer have to land in Cancun and drive to the southern city to reach beach destinations like Mahahual.
The current air connection from Miami to Chetumal lasts 2 hours and 10 minutes with two weekly flgiths, every Wednesday and Sunday.
Tourism activities can be enjoyed in Chetumal as well as other places such as Bacalar and Mahahual in the south of Quintana Roo. Darío Flota, the director of the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council, points out that the southern region also offers a range of hotels, archaeological sites and of course, crowd-free pristine beaches.
