Chetumal, Q.R. — The state’s capital city of Chetumal received its first direct Miami-Chetumal international flight. On Wednesday afternoon, the American Eagle flight from American Airlines landed at Chetumal International with 76 passengers.
It was the first international flight to land at the airport in several years. The flight, which will fly direct twice a week, will help promote the southern area of Quintana Roo, including the Grand Costa Maya, said governor Carlos Joaquin.
He stressed that the flight has the potential to continue attracting more routes from other airlines and, of course, more international tourism arrivals.
Darío Flota Ocampo from the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council acknowledged that the new flight is not currently being promoted, however, they are hoping to do so in the new year.
“This pioneering flight in the state capital will benefit the entire southern region and expand its tourist offer, contributing to our objective of strengthening the economy and development of this region,” Joaquin said during the inauguration of the flight’s arrival.
Vicky Uzal, commercial director at American Airlines for Mexico said, “this year, American celebrates 40 years of serving in the state of Quintana Roo, operating from Cancun and today, with our new service in Chetumal, we will offer better access to tourists who wish to visit the capital of the state as well as the tourist destinations of Bacalar and different archaeological sites nearby.”
