Riviera Maya: The Maya Train route will connect 40 municipalities in five states to 26 archaeological zones. Javier May Rodrguez, General Director of Fonatur, said.
Once complete, the train will run 1,554 kilometers across five states, 40 municipalities, and 181 localities, offering tourism, local passenger, and cargo transportation.
“It’s created more than 100,000 jobs in the southeast and 11,000 in Ciudad Sahagn, Hidalgo,” he said.
Rodrguez confirmed that the Maya Train will be inaugurated in December 2023. First train will be delivered in July 2023 for bearing tests in Cancun, Quintana Roo.
Rodrguez said the Maya Train is the largest public investment in the Mexican southeast to address historical inequalities. The project will also protect and preserve the country’s archaeological heritage in Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo.
“Manufacturing of the 42 trains began. They will be modern, comfortable, safe, and environmentally friendly since most will have a hybrid system and can use electric power or UBA diesel,” he explained.
“Manufacturing began in September, the first box will be finished in November, and the first train will arrive on July 9, 2023,” he said.
Rodríguez said there will be short trains with four wagons for 230 passengers and long trains with seven cars for 450 passengers.
For the electrification of the Mayan Train, the Federal Electricity Commission is completing 53 projects, including 43 substations and 10 transmission lines. This will increase the Yucatan Peninsula’s power supply capacity by 150 percent, from 3,000 MW in 2022 to 4,521 MW in 2024.
“With the train running, this increased capacity will guarantee the 2024 supply of 2,642 megawatts. With the new projects, CFE’s electricity supply will be 42% greater than demand by 2024, which will solve the region’s blackout problem.
The Maya Train also helps the environment by supporting the Sembrando Vida Program, which reforests the southeast with 500 million trees and 140 million plants from community nurseries.
He also announced new Protected Natural Areas in Tulum, Neuvo Uxmal, and Calakmul.
The Maya Train integrates a program to improve 26 archaeological zones and build nine visitor service centers.
He said hotel construction along the Maya Train route is underway.
