Merida, Isla Holbox, Tulum — there’s no shortage of beautiful places to visit in the Yucatan Peninsula. One lesser known destination in the region is Bacalar, a tranquil town overlooking Laguna Bacalar which is also known as Laguna de Siete Colores (Lake of Seven Colors). As the name indicates, the lake is famous for its numerous shades of blue beckoning you to swim or kayak in its placid water. Bacalar is located near the Mexico/Belize border and an approximately four-hour drive from the Cancun airport.
Interested in visiting Bacalar? This upcoming winter international hospitality group Habitas is opening its first property there spanning eight hectares and 35 cabanas. They will be the first global hospitality group opening a property in Bacalar. Habitas Bacalar will focus on wellness and restoration offering yoga, floating meditation and free diving, as well as a spa and communal gathering space. The hotel is also committed to conservation and sustainability, working with local communities through its philanthropic arm, Habitas RISE.
To get the full picture of Habitas Bacalar we spoke to Oliver Ripley, Co-Founder and CEO of Habitas. Here’s everything you need to know about the property which is slated to open soon in winter 20/21.
Why did Habitas decide to open a location in Bacalar?
Oliver Ripley: Habitas is always looking to discover new and uncharted locations for its community. We believe Bacalar combines nature, beauty, a sense of adventure, incredible food experiences, cenotes and a rich history — all accessible from Cancun. It’s found on a freshwater lagoon, 42 km in length, known as the Lake of Seven colors. Bacalar is located just driving distance from Tulum and near the border of Belize, and is known for its natural beauty and Mayan healing and energy. Visitors often compare it to the Maldives because of its transparent blue waters, making it a perfect destination to escape.
