In Bacalar, progress is slowly made on the issue of drainage mainly in the houses, despite being the main pollutant factor of the Laguna of the seven colors.
In 2018, in a study called Coastal Landscape of the Bacalar Lagoon: land occupation and production of the imaginary by tourism, UNAM researchers point out that in Bacalar a residential tourism configuration has been developed on the shore of the lagoon as a result of a Constant real estate speculation that began in the 1960s and currently occupies 45 percent of the Laguna’s shore.
The director of Ecology of the City of Bacalar, Romel Cano said that to date almost 100 percent of the 160 hoteliers and restaurants have been connected to the drainage, but there are difficulties in the houses. The main reason is the economic issue since People must absorb the connection inside their premises.
The official assured that the new sections that are incorporated already make the connection to the drainage obligatory; However, not the entire city has access to the drainage that CAPA has placed. This infrastructure is only concentrated in the downtown area, starting at 9th Street and in the coastal area of the “Javier Rojo Gómez” Superior Normal School.
In addition to the efforts to care for the Laguna, awareness campaigns have been initiated to preserve natural resources such as stromatolites and chivita snail, sharing responsibilities with federal authorities.
