BACALAR TAKES THE SPOTLIGHT IN SOUTHERN QUINTANA ROO’S INTERNATIONAL TOURISM PUSH

Southern Quintana Roo is getting in front of an important international audience: the professionals who help decide where travelers go next.

From October 20–26, 2026, the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council (CPTQ) hosted tour operators from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru through its Hosted Buyers LATAM program, held alongside Cancun Travel Mart 2026.

The program paired business meetings with firsthand destination experiences, including a journey to Bacalar aboard the Maya Train, visits to Chetumal and archaeological sites, and opportunities to experience the region’s food and natural attractions.

For Bacalar, this is meaningful exposure at the commercial level putting the destination in front of people who can build it into travel programs across five Latin American markets.

What Is the Hosted Buyers LATAM Program?

Hosted Buyers LATAM is a tourism trade initiative designed to connect international tour operators with hotels and other tourism suppliers in the Mexican Caribbean.

During the 2026 program, participating buyers attended business meetings, networking activities and destination visits. The goal was to strengthen commercial relationships, support the creation of new travel products and expand the region’s reach in Latin America.

The destination visits gave those business conversations a practical foundation. Operators could experience the places they might recommend, understand how different attractions fit together and meet the businesses that could serve their clients.

This is where southern Quintana Roo had an opportunity to shine.

Bacalar, Chetumal and Maya Heritage Were Part of the Itinerary

The CPTQ worked with the Southern Hotels Association and local businesses to introduce operators to the south’s cultural, natural, and gastronomic offerings.

The itinerary brought together several experiences that could become building blocks for future travel programs:

DESTINATION OR EXPERIENCEWHAT OPERATORS EXPERIENCED
BacalarA visit to the lagoon and an introduction to the destination
Maya TrainTravel to Bacalar aboard the regional rail network
ChetumalA tour of Quintana Roo’s state capital
Ichkabal and OxtankahGuided visits highlighting archaeological heritage and Maya history
Regional gastronomyFood experiences featuring local products and flavors

Together, these experiences presented the south as a region with enough variety to support a broader itinerary.

For someone planning a vacation, that combination matters. A lagoon visit, archaeological exploration, regional food and time in the state capital offer several reasons to make southern Quintana Roo part of the trip.

Why This Exposure Matters for Bacalar Tourism

A destination can be extraordinary and still struggle to reach travelers who do not know it exists.

Tour operators help close that gap. They connect destinations with customers through travel agencies, organized tours, vacation packages and other sales channels.

By bringing operators to Bacalar, the program gave them firsthand knowledge they can use when developing and selling trips.

An operator who has experienced the lagoon, traveled through the region and met local suppliers is better equipped to explain the destination to a client. They can assess which experiences suit their audience and how to incorporate the south into a wider Mexican Caribbean itinerary.

The opportunity for Bacalar is to turn that professional familiarity into more bookable travel options.

The article does not report resulting booking volumes or new packages. Those will be important outcomes to watch as the relationships develop.

Southern Quintana Roo’s Hidden Gems Are Reaching a Wider Audience

Quintana Roo’s best-known tourism centers already have substantial international recognition. This initiative deliberately introduced buyers to more of what the state offers beyond those established destinations.

According to CPTQ director Andrés Martínez Reynoso, the combination of commercial activities and destination experiences was intended to highlight the state’s diversity, including the south’s connectivity, archaeological heritage, natural wealth, and Maya legacy.

That approach gives Bacalar a place within a larger regional story.

The lagoon can draw a traveler’s attention. Nearby cultural and historical experiences can give them reasons to explore further and spend more time in the region.

For southern Quintana Roo, the potential is a fuller role in the visitor’s itinerary with more opportunities for local businesses to participate.

Five Latin American Markets, More Opportunities to Build Tourism Relationships

The participating operators came from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.

Reaching buyers across these five countries supports the CPTQ’s stated strategy of diversifying tourism markets and strengthening links between international buyers and Mexican Caribbean suppliers.

For Bacalar businesses, a broader network of commercial relationships could create additional ways to reach future guests.

If those relationships produce new itineraries and overnight bookings, the benefits could extend to accommodation providers, restaurants, guides, transportation businesses and other local services.

The program is a step toward that outcome. Its longer-term value will depend on how the contacts and destination experiences translate into trips travelers can actually book.

What Does This Mean for Bacalar Real Estate?

At Buy Bacalar, we follow tourism initiatives because destination awareness is one factor that can influence demand for vacation accommodation.

This program puts Bacalar in front of a wider network of travel professionals. If it leads to more overnight visitors, it could help broaden the potential guest audience for hotels and vacation rentals.

The announcement itself does not establish higher rental occupancy, property appreciation, or investment returns. Those require separate evidence and property-specific analysis.

For buyers, the useful takeaway is that Bacalar is part of an organized international promotion effort supported by tourism authorities and local businesses.

When evaluating a property, that broader context belongs alongside the essentials: location, legal documentation, construction quality, operating expenses, and dependable management.

A Meaningful Step for Bacalar and the South

Hosted Buyers LATAM 2026 brought business development and destination discovery together.

Operators from five Latin American countries had the opportunity to meet suppliers, experience Bacalar and explore the surrounding region before deciding how to introduce it to their customers.

That is a practical way to build exposure for southern Quintana Roo and a reason to pay attention to what comes next.

Bacalar has been part of the experience. Now the opportunity is to make it part of more travel plans.
