Tulum, Q.R. — Tulum International Airport has hit a major milestone, reaching 1 million passengers in just 11 months. This accomplishment far surpasses initial projections. Governor Mara Lezama celebrated the achievement, calling it a historic moment for both Tulum and the Mexican Caribbean. Reaching this milestone so quickly highlights Tulum’s rapid growth as a top travel destination.
Rapid Growth as Tulum Airport Hits 1 Million Passengers
The airport’s one-millionth passenger, Gerardo Treviño Zúñiga, arrived from Monterrey on a Viva Aerobús flight. His arrival underscores Tulum International Airport’s quick rise as a major travel hub. According to Governor Lezama, “The arrival of our one-millionth passenger reflects the confidence that travelers place in Tulum and Quintana Roo. With over 59% of passengers returning, this achievement shows that we’re moving in the right direction.”
As Tulum surpasses 1 million passengers, tourism and local business growth are also expected to keep climbing.
How Tulum Airport’s 1 Million Passengers Surpassed Expectations
Initially, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) projected that Tulum International Airport would handle about 700,000 passengers and 4,500 flights in its first year. However, the airport has already exceeded these figures. It completed over 7,790 operations to reach 1 million passengers.
Tourism expert Javier Mendoza stated, “This milestone marks Tulum’s transformation from a boutique destination to a key travel hub. Now, both leisure travelers and investors are drawn to Tulum’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, and modern infrastructure, such as the Mayan Train.”
With current momentum, the airport is expected to close 2024 with over 10,100 operations and approximately 1.3 million passengers. This success boosts tourism, supports local businesses, and strengthens Tulum’s role as a connectivity hub for the Mexican Caribbean. Additionally, the upcoming Mayan Train will further enhance Tulum’s accessibility.
