The entrepreneurs of the tourism industry in southern Quintana Roo insist that the name of the Chetumal International Airport be changed to incorporate the Bacalar brand, i.e., the airport should be renamed Chetumal-Bacalar.
Since Europeans now look for Bacalar 96% more often on the Internet than Chetumal, they contend that adding the name of Bacalar to the airport would increase its appeal to visitors.
Statistics indicate that there is more interest in Bacalar than Chetumal, according to businesspeople. Since the Seven Colors Lagoon in Bacalar is more well-known and alluring than Chetumal, the state capital, including Bacalar beside the airport would alert travelers of the close proximity of the two locations.
Although there is a lot of interest in visiting Bacalar, according to Josué Palomo, president of Aliarse Quintana Roo, South Zone, foreign travelers often only discover the Cancun airport when seeking for information on the air connection to the area, which is six hours distant by road. This is due to the fact that Chetumal is unknown outside of Mexico.
“We recommended that the airport be renamed Chetumal-Bacalar International Airport,” he added. “In a consensus that has been established with businesses from Chetumal and Bacalar, for a marketing and connectivity problem, it would enable international tourists to link the closeness between both locations. The plan to rename the airport Chetumal-Bacalar aims to address the underawareness of Quintana Roo’s capital and to boost the area’s economy and tourism. It is important to note that the distance between Bacalar and Chetumal, which is 38 kilometers on land, is extremely little.
