The capital of the state of Quintana Roo is preparing to become the seat of the federal Ministry of Tourism, starting in July.
Aeropuertos y Servicios Auxiliares (ASA) will invest 146.9 million pesos this year for the modernization of the Chetumal International Airport and offer a better travel experience, according to the annual program of public works of the agency led by Alfonso Sarabia de la Garza since October Of 2014.
Thus, the capital of Quintana Roo is preparing to become the seat of the federal Ministry of Tourism, currently in Mexico City, starting in July, and look for the nearby location of the Tren Maya station, which for the moment is not contemplated.
The expansion of the passenger building, the construction of a control tower and fire system are the three projects (out of 14) that require the most investment: 48, 37 and 16 million pesos, respectively. In addition, a new study on passenger flow has been considered.
Last year, the Chetumal terminal was the fourth of the 19 managed by ASA, with the highest number of national passengers served (321,657, which represented an increase of 16.9% compared to 2017), although in international terms it went from 391 to 128 users.
Interjet, Volaris, Viva Aerobus and MAYAir are the airlines that have regular flights at that airport. The first three connect with Mexico City and the fourth makes an airlift with Cancun. From February 2, Volaris added the Guadalajara-Chetumal route.
“The Chetumal airport is located in a state with a large influx of tourists and has the most developed hotel infrastructure in the country and in a very competitive environment for the airports of Cancun and Cozumel, which causes the lowest flow of passengers. However, in the future it is expected that the tourism potential of the south of the region will attract an increasing number of tourists, “said ASA.
The interest and haste to modernize the terminal operated by ASA are shared with the state authorities.
Last Sunday, after the presentation of the National Tourism Strategy, the governor of Quintana Roo, Carlos Joaquín González, mentioned through social networks that “to make strategic use of the international airport of the capital, I asked President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to consider the location of a Train Maya station on the Bacalar-Chetumal route. “
