Chetumal, Q.R. — Governor Carlos Joaquín González supervised the work being done to modernize the air terminal expansion of the Chetumal Airport.
He says the expansion project will allow for growth in the operation of new airlines by receiving more flights and triple the number of passengers it receives, he said after visiting the work-in-progress.
The project consists of the extension of 500 more meters of the runway and the remodeling of its main building, he said stressing the importance of the project by increasing connectivity in the south of the state, which will impact tourist and commercial mobility, as well as promote its development.
Chetumal’s air terminal is operated and managed by Airports and Auxiliary Services (ASA).
According to ASA, during 2019, it reported 5,623 operations and 368,332 users, which represented a growth of 14.5 percent compared to 2018. Its cargo handling also increased 5.9 percent over the previous year.
Common airlines to use Chetumal include Interjet, VivaAerobus, and Volaris. With the modernization, it is expected to increase traffic so that vacationers move from Chetumal to destinations such as Bacalar, Calderitas, Mahahual, and Xul-Ha.
The expansion of its terminal began in 2017. ASA says the added space will improve the level of service and attention to passengers by reducing line wait times for documents and baggage claim.
